Undergraduate Studies in Biology

Students majoring in Biology are provided a well-balanced background in the life sciences. The characteristics of life are examined at all levels, from the functions of a single cell to the dynamics of an ecosystem. The field- and laboratory-based curriculum includes Image3significant writing, research, and analytical components designed to prepare students for careers in biology or for studies at the graduate level. To meet these objectives, the Department has established several degree concentrations, each with a different focus within the discipline. Each concentration requires the completion of a core curriculum (Concepts of Biology, Zoology, Botany, and Genetics) and cognate courses in chemistry, math, and in some concentrations, physics. A minor in biology consists of a minimum of 14 semester hours taken in courses numbered 2000 and above.

DEGREE CONCENTRATIONS

Bachelor of Arts
This flexible concentration is designed for highly-directed students who wish to focus on disciplines not addressed by the other degree concentrations. Students pursuing the B.A. degree must complete 19 semester hours of courses selected from the various sub-disciplines of biology. Completion of a minor and four semesters of foreign language are required.

Bachelor of Science/Ecology and Environmental Biology

This concentration is designed to prepare students for careers or graduate programs in organismal biology, environmental studies, or related disciplines (e.g. forest ecology, wildlife biology). To accommodate the special interests of students within the larger field of ecology and environmental biology, specific laboratory and field-based courses are completed within one of four concentrations:

Bachelor of Science/Pre-Professional and Paramedical

This concentration is designed to prepare students for successful admission into professional schools (medical, dental, veterinary, optometry), or for careers in biomedical research or other health-related areas. Students in this concentration complete an extensive laboratory-based curriculum in the biomedical sciences.

Pre-Health Professions Program

Bachelor of Science/Clinical Laboratory Sciences (Medical Technology)
This concentration is designed to prepare students for affiliated programs in medical technology. Students complete three years of selected biology courses within the Department, and the fourth year, or clinical phase, is provided at an affiliated school of medical technology.

Bachelor of Science/Teaching
This concentration is designed for students intending to pursue careers in teaching science. Completion of the degree provides the student with a North Carolina teacher certification in secondary biology with teaching endorsements in chemistry and physical sciences. Students complete an extensive and well-rounded curriculum in the biological sciences, along with additional course work within the College of Education.
